What to Wear for Your Headshot Session
Choosing what to wear for your headshot session might seem simple, but the right outfit can make all the difference. Your clothing helps set the tone of your photo, supports your personal brand, and makes sure the focus stays where it belongs (on you).
In my Bend, Oregon studio, clients often ask what looks best in front of the camera. Here’s what I suggest based on years of experience.
Start with Something You Feel Great In
Rule number one: wear something you love. If you feel confident in it, that confidence will come through in your expression and body language. Avoid anything that makes you feel stiff, self-conscious, or uncomfortable.
Stick with Simple, Solid Colors
Busy patterns and logos can distract from your face. Solid colors photograph beautifully and keep the attention on you. Jewel tones, neutrals, and soft earth tones tend to work well on camera and flatter most skin tones.
If you're unsure, bring a few options. I’ll help you choose what works best during your session.
Choose Necklines with Intention
Your neckline helps frame your face, so avoid anything too low-cut or bulky. A simple crew neck, scoop neck, V-neck, or collared shirt can all work, depending on the look you're going for. Avoid oversized collars, ruffles, or anything with a lot of volume around the shoulders.
Dress for the Role You Want
Think about where you’ll use your headshot. Are you updating your LinkedIn profile? Launching a business website? Pitching to casting agents? Your outfit should reflect the industry you’re in — or aiming for. Professionals in corporate roles might lean more formal, while creatives or entrepreneurs often opt for a more relaxed look.
Layers and Texture Photograph Well
Adding a jacket, cardigan, or textured fabric can bring visual interest to your image without overpowering it. Just keep it simple and avoid anything too shiny or trendy.
Avoid All-White or Neon Brights
All-white outfits can sometimes wash out skin tones under studio lighting, and neon or overly bright colors can reflect onto your face. Stick to colors that bring out your eyes and skin tone, and that you would normally wear in your professional life.
